Indonesia’s government recently unveiled plans for a groundbreaking “golden visa” initiative, with a government official even hailing it as a transformative measure set to attract top-tier global talent and bolster foreign investments within the largest economy in Southeast Asia.
The forthcoming golden visa program aims to magnetize exceptional expertise in fields like digitalization, healthcare, research, and technology.
Envisioned as a game-changing strategy, the initiative is anticipated to draw in a diverse array of foreigners, including digital nomads and enterprising individuals, who will contribute to Indonesia’s economic growth.
According to sources interviewed by The Business Times, the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights is currently refining the ministerial decree, which will serve as the foundation for allowing foreign tech professionals to reside and work in Indonesia for a period of up to a decade.
Golden visa holders will relish a host of privileges. Beyond the extended 10-year authorization, beneficiaries will enjoy expedited immigration services, the opportunity to acquire assets within the country, and an accelerated path to acquiring citizenship. Eligible applicants encompass foreign investors, highly skilled labor, and prosperous retirees.
The impending launch of this visa scheme, although specific eligibility criteria are yet to be unveiled, has garnered favorable responses from key players in the Indonesian industry. For some time now, there has been a persistent demand to enhance the existing work permit system, characterized by one-year visas necessitating renewal.
The objective behind this push for improvement is to effectively address the substantial dearth of talent required to propel the nation’s expansive and progressively burgeoning digital economy.
